How many kids do you have?

I am raising one daughter.

?

I heard someone say yesterday that he raised three daughters. I think that might be my new answer.

Let them wonder, and possibly ask, about the others. Was I a bad mother, and they were taken away to foster care? Did one die? Maybe they won't even notice the particular phrasing.

Let us know how you go. I always wonder if people asking those questions ever really take any notice of our answers. People are so used to asking what they think are straightforward questions like that, but do they really care about the answer and do they even really listen when we tell them? I swear sometimes when I've said "I had a daughter who died" (or similar) some people have barely even let it register and just moved right on with the conversation.

I've started saying "I have a son." It's true, then I whisper to myself " and a beautiful daughter who died.". just as true, but I don't always feel like sharing that with everyone.

It bothers me more when people ask if we're going to have more and I say no. Honestly DH & I always planned to only have one child and that's usually what I tell people. They don't need to know how stressful and scary my second pregnancy was. I'm happy with my son and husband, I haven't felt the urge for another child.

I should clarify my last comment that it annoys me when people try to convince me that I should have more children, like having just one is wrong. Have as many as you want, one is the right number for me.

I never thought that "have" was such a problematic word. I like your answer very much - it puts the ball in the questioner's court so if they really want to know they can ask.
